Holly Lake

Moderated by Holly Lake

Holly Lake is an award-winning journalist from Newfoundland and Labrador. Her work reporting on federal politics has focused on animal welfare, fisheries, oceans and the environment. She covered the 'Free Willy' bill's long swim through Parliament from the early days for iPolitics, through to its leap into law to ban whale and dolphin captivity in Canada.

She has also covered legislative efforts to ban the shark fin trade and cosmetic animal testing, and written extensively about the push to narrow the definition of bestiality and broaden animal fighting and cruelty provisions in the Criminal Code. Looking offshore, she has penned many pieces about the creatures that call the ocean home, in particular the plight of endangered North Atlantic right whales and the ongoing efforts to save them.

Holly has an undergraduate degree in law and political science from Carleton University, a master's degree in journalism from Western University, and a law degree from the University of Ottawa. She is currently articling with Ecojustice in Halifax and very happy to be back by the ocean.
